CEPHAS 2026: Free Will and Grace

A Thomistic Perspective

(Friday 28th-Monday 31st August 2026)

At CEPHAS 2026, we reflected together on the mystery of human freedom, and its relationship to the quest for truth, meaning, purpose, and happiness in the contemporary world.

George gave a series of lectures, while the smaller Summa theologiae discussion groups were led this year by Sr Valery, George, and Stefan. In dialogue with St Thomas Aquinas, we explored questions about the nature of freedom, free will, conscience, the problem of evil, whether we have free will at all, and how we can reconcile our freedom with God’s providence. We also addressed the relationship between our free will and God’s grace, including in relation to God’s predestination.

We were delighted to welcome the Rev’d Dr Simon Gaine OP as our keynote speaker and chaplain. Fr Simon gave a superb evening talk ‘Will there be a free will in heaven’, drawing on his book of the same title, and provided a convivial and witty presence throughout. Stefan also provided a fascinating talk – ‘Free Will & Consciousness: Some Scientific Considerations’ – with particular reference to the work of Ian McGilchrist, Norman Doidge, and Rupert Sheldrake.

In addition to the liturgy of the hours and daily mass, there was also time for further discussion, ‘Stefan’s bar’ in the evenings, and for strolling in the beautiful grounds of Stonyhurst College.

Participants commented:
